Thanks guys! It was a pleasure for me hosting the oval-cup, with the most competitive field in oval-cup history.

Grats to Kelvin on winning the race and the cup!

Well... what could I say about my race? Kind of awesome, I guess.

Well, to me the final race was quite a thriller!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the GPL Calder-Park Thunderdome is only another version (graphicwise) of the Charlotte Oval which is part of the GPL OvalRank .
The first day out on track, I took a ride with my Charlotte-Lotus. Car was quite fast on a short run, but I wasn’t happy with the car’s handling when I extended the fuel load up to 65 laps (1-stop strategy).
My racestrategist came up with this bold idea, to transfer the Eagle-Setup we ran the fall of 2011 Oval-Cup at Atlanta over to the Lotus. Back in the days that Eagle was a rocket (might be the best car (setup) I’ve ever had in GPL on an oval), the adjustments (compared the Charlotte-Lotus) showed considerable differences , but guess what! It worked perfectly as soon as I made my first shakedown out on track .
The handling was much better now, and just like 2011 at Atlanta, I took the risk and gave the zero-stop-strategy a shot .
Prior to the race, I felt pretty competitive, but then David and Harry showed what they are made of, …and that was just pure speed . I wasn’t within reach of their lap times, so my only chance was to beat them on strategy. From early on till halfway point, I ran quite high engine-rpms, to squeeze everything out of the ford’s power plant.
After the pit shuffle I suddenly was 10 sec ahead of Hedgehog Harry. Quite a gap, so I geared up to 5th to keep engine rpms & temps down. My biggest concern was engine reliability, 'cause the first half of the race was very stressful to that ford motor .
At the end strategy paid of and I crossed the finish line 1st with only 2 liters of fuel left.
Wohuuu, I tell ya, that final race was a nail-biter.
I have to bow to Harry & David! It’s beyond me that you are able to run a sub 31.sec in single lap quals on cold tyres . I just couldn’t keep up with your speed, the only chance for the oval native was race strategy .

I hope to see the whole oval-crew back in the hunt in 2014 . Unbelievable how competitive this cup has become in 2013. ... 4 different winners in 6 races

I thought the Lotus wouldn't work at Calder, so I took the Eagle, 30.894s. When I saw Harry did 30.733s in the Lotus, there was no time left to switch. The race was postponed and I gave the Lotus a second chance, 30.701s. Harry improved to 30.681s. My race setups were very unstable , except the last one, which was fine. I did 30.91s in quali and got pole position.

The first race half was smooth driving. I kept the RF temperature lower than the RR temp to prevent the car from pushing towards the wall. That ment lifting at T1 and T3 and full throttle at T2 and T4. I was able to stay ahead of Harry. I noticed that other drivers (Kelvin, Carsten, Col) lost time, but they had a heavy fuel load. I didn't know that.

In lap 39 I lapped Col on the backstraight and then, with a smoking RF tyre, I lapped Carsten's Eagle in the next turn. In lap 47 I leaded 4s to Harry and 12s to Kelvin. I made a pitstop halfway. The car didn't reset easily, because of traffic on s/f. When I left the pitlane, my car lost grip and hit the left wall. I lost 6s in this lap to Harry. I merged into traffic behind him.

Kelvin didn't pit and took the lead. In lap 66 Kelvin leaded 12s to Harry and 13s to me. Rainer (Brabham) was only 19s behind me.

Then I needed 2 shift-Rs in 2 minutes. When I was about to lap Fabian I took risks to follow Harry closely. I spun, hit the wall and lost a tyre. I steered to the apron. Shift-R. Lost 17s. Race leader Kelvin showed up behind me. The front straigth has two fast bends. When I made room for Kelvin, I missed the first of the two and touched the wall. I had to reset the damaged car. Carsten and Col drove by.

Col (4th) was 13s ahead now. My Lotus was kind of loose. When I reached Col I found that out. It was a huge challenge to exit T2 properly to overtake him. After that, I chased Carsten to get on the podium. When I lifted a little in T4, I spun off. I laughed when I saw my Lotus ride the wall in the replay. Col overtook me. In the next lap I finished 5th. A fun race, a great season. Thanks Kelvin for motivating us into this.

Congratulations to the Cup winners: Carsten Theile (Challenge, Double Dash) and Kelvin Mace (Oval).
Thank you, admins of 2013.
Thanks Fabian and others for the analyses.

Regards,
David

my car was a bit tight, especially on corner entries. also I had out-tuned the car's ability to get a drift-angle done.
so I was aware that I was generally slow.
still, after the start, I felt a bit held up by Mario's Honda but couldn't make the pass due to the strong Honda powerplant.

after about 10 laps my car suddenly and very unexpectedly spun.
I was able to move on without a reset but the temperatures of the tyres have skyrocketed and they were not able to cool off for most of the run.

the rest was the usual paying attention of being lapped and avoid hitting the wall.

I made 1 stop but I had a little bit too much fuel. anyway, I don't think it made that much of a difference in laptimes. I was just slow as such.

anyway I enjoyed the race because on the oval there is always something to do and there is a car in the mirror now and then..

nice win, Kelvin. congratulations!
and also for the cup-win!

I hope we'll keep it running in 2014!

Harry
