Which Graphics Card ?

I'm thinking of buying or building a new PC (my old one really struggles with GPL) but which graphics card to specify ?
I've heard that ATI cards are cheaper but don't run OpenGL properly, yet others seem to say that nVidias are trouble. Which is the truth and which is best for GPL?

Secondly, which is the most suitable model - I think that an nVidia 8800GTS should be ok for price/performance but I've no idea about ATI cards or the ATI numbering system.

Can anyone advise ?

Hi Glenn,
if you have an agp-system, the radeon x1950 is excellent for GPL, has a sharp imagequality and works with win98/xp/vista without any flaws in opengl, but has superior image/filteringquality with directX.

DONT buy a Radeon 3850 if you use xp, it will turn off the 3dacceleration when playing gpl in directx, it is unplayable in a race with more cars regardless how good your cpu is. OpenGL is working but looks really ugly to be honest. It may be that the newer models (ati 48xx) produce the same problem because of the built in powersave mode, but i dont know for sure.
it is working ok in windows Vista, but the imagequality is inferior compared to the x1950 and i am still unable to use antialiasing in vista.

Cant say that much about nvidiacards because the newer models are all for pci-express. an 8800 gts has enough power for sure, and i havent read about any complaints with gpl, and nvidia has much better drivers than ati, those drivers (incl. the catalystcontrolcenter)really suck and bloat the system, especially in vista, where even in classic desktopmode the imagequality is much blurrier than in xp.

greetings, gerd

Thanks for the advice, Gerd.

I think I'll probably go for a PCI-e setup, it just depends what turns up on e-bay. At least I know now which ATI card to use (and which not to use !). As a matter of interest, what processor do you use, and does it allow you full graphics even with a full grid ?

My current system is an Athlon 900 MHz, and it's fine for testing (ie one car) in gpl, but in rookie cup or challenge races, it almost freezes at the start and has poor framerates throughout the race, making good laptimes almost impossible (well, it's the best excuse I could think of ). So how much processor power do I need to run GPL smoothly in all situations ?

Thanks,

Glenn.

Hi Glenn,

i use a

AMD Athlon 64 3200
1GB RAM
ATI X1950 Pro AGP
Creative Audigy 2 ZS
22" TFT @ 1680x1050

Thanks Christian,

that gives me a good baseline specification to aim for, and not too expensive either.

Problem is, if I upgrade my equipment, I'll have to find another excuse for being slow.....

Thanks Jens,

A used X1950 Pro arrived here yesterday, thanks to Ebay. A new PC case arrived at the same time. All I have to do now is wait for the Motherboard & Processor, HD, DVD-RW etc. etc. and a new copy of XP (which is in the post from Germany). As you can imagine, I'm having a rather impatient Christmas
